Black Voices

THE PRESERVATION OF BLACK ORAL MUSIC TRADITIONS IS AT THE HEART OF OUR MISSION

Formed in 1987 in Birmingham by its Musical Director Carol Pemberton MBE, Black Voices has gained an international reputation as Europe’s finest female a cappella quintet.

For almost three decades the ensemble has captivated global audiences with their music and performances in the black oral tradition – an early music form that is based on the ancient folklores and story telling of Africa and the Caribbean which have impacted the development of classical and more recent music genres such as blues, jazz and pop. Black Voices has recorded many of its albums at GRS, its base since 2001.

Black Voices has over its 27 years been researching, distilling, teaching and performing black music styles in the oral tradition. Led by the Musical Director, a core group from Black Voices undertake a range of singing workshops as part of its regular education outreach programme throughout the UK.
